Biography

Walter Harriman has been a gate technician at the SGC since the organization was founded. Walter is a most dilligent conscientious technician for the USAF.

PORTRAYALS

Gary Jones portrayed Walter for all his guest and supporting appearances, which have occurred in every season of Stargate SG-1 and also included some appearances in Stargate Atlantis. In the Stargate SG-1 episode Brief Candle, Gary Jones was given a supporting credit as 'Technician', but he did not appear.

RANK/SALUTATIONS

Walter was a master sergeant in the USAF, until, by the episode Avalon. His shoulder insignia in regular unifrom was that of a master sergeant, and the nametag on his coveralls read 'MSGT'. In the episode Avalon, he introduced himself as chief master sergeant, and his coverall nametag read 'CMSGT'.

THE CHARACTER'S NAME

This character's name has changed through the run of Stargate SG-1. Originally, he bore a nametag with just the name Davis. When in one episode, an alternate version of the character was referred to as "airman", many viewers thought that he was referred to as Harriman. As a result, many fan websites began using this name for the character. However, he continued to wear the nametag bearing the name Davis. When the show began dressing him in coveralls, they added the first name of Norm to his Inow cloth) nametag. Thus, he was Norman Davis. In another episode, another alternate version of the character was addressed as "Walter". (This was an homage to his resemblance of the M*A*S*H character Walter O'Reilly.) Thus, even more confustion was borne. His early supporting credits only credited him as 'Technician', while his later guest credits only provide the actor's name. Finally, in season 8, the show decided to settle on one name. Thereafter, his nametags and show dialog made him Walter Harriman.
